PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING ALUMNUS TO SHARE PHOTOJOURNALISM TECHNIQUES AT JOURNALISM WORKSHOP
Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer and alumnus Brad Loper (BA, Fine Arts, 1993) and Irwin Thompson, another Pulitzer Prize recipient, will be among various journalists sharing their techniques and tips at the annual Workshop for Young Journalists sponsored by UT Arlington and the DFW Network of Hispanic Communicators from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 18 in the Fine Arts Building, 700 W. Second St. The annual workshop provides journalism experiences for college and high school students and recent graduates. In addition to informative sessions on journalism, public relations and online media, students will also cover a news conference, receive a writer's critique and participate in an interactive lunch session on ethics. The workshop's cost is $10 per person until Friday. Registration after then will be $15 on site. For more information and to register, visit www.dfwhispanic.org.

WRITING THE PERFECT LEAD
A lead is the beginning of the story. A good lead catches the reader's attention making them want to read. Journalists and other experts will show you the techniques on writing the perfect lead.


 


2. JOURNALISM-CAREER:
GETTING YOUR FIRST JOB, WHATEVER IT TAKES!
Panelists share their ideas and offer advice on getting that first job in television/radio.

 

 


3. JOURNALISM-CAREER:
THE NEW DIGITAL FRONTIER: NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN ONLINE MEDIA
Blogging, Podcasts, Digital Photography and Online news are the latest new trends helping shape journalism and mass media. Experts in the field will give insight into the trends.


   


4 PHOTOJOURNALISM:
PHOTOJOURNALISM TODAY AND WHERE IT'S HEADING
Dallas Morning News photographers will be on hand to discuss photojournalism techniques. The photographers also will discuss videography, as more newspapers are using video to enhance stories.

MOCK NEWS CONFERENCE

Real live news conference featuring Arlington Police PIO

Students will get the opportunity to attend and cover a news conference from a real-life situation. Bring your notebook as students are expected to take notes, gather as much information as they can and ask questions of the officers/officials on hand.


10:20 to 11:50 a.m.
 

WRITING THE STORY

Turning your information into a story. Broadcast students will get an opportunity to do a live taping in front of a camera. Print students will write their stories for the daily newspaper.

Professionals will be on hand for guidance and assistance. Students will write for PRINT or BROADCAST.

Noon to 1:30 p.m.
 

LUNCH & ETHICS DISCUSSION

Featuring Dallas Morning News Columnist
Macarena Hernandez

Students will go over three or four ethic situations and get an opportunity to voice their opinions and say what they would do if they faced that situation.

2:00 to 2:45 p.m.

INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING: GETTING BELOW THE SURFACE
Investigative reporting and watchdog journalism are more than just following the money trail. Area journalists reveal the techniques and tips to getting below the surface.

 


2. PUBLIC RELATIONS:
PUBLIC RELATIONS: MORE THAN JUST SPIN
Learn more about careers in public and media relations from seasoned and new professionals.

3 p.m.
 

RECEPTION

Professionals will be available to mingle with everyone during the reception after the last session. *Writing contest winners will be announced.*
