Abstract (about 50 words): | Writing endows us with the magical power of transcending our condition and, without exception, by taking the pen women have managed to find a voice of their own. In her second novel written in English, The Bastard of Istanbul, Elif Shafak ventures, through the numerous female characters that populate the book, not only to empower women, but also to revive the collective memory of her nation, to "re-write" the Turkish national identity. The aim of this paper is to investigate how the written word gives the author the opportunity to experience life in different terms, to offer other perspectives on facts and emotions, to add a complementary layer to history, to gain and reveal a new sense of self.
